Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy

I am just so happy so I have to write it down. Then maybe I can sleep. Anyway I finally was able to get my horse to lope during practice this week. He and I have loped out on trails just after I got him in October but we didn't have much time after that to work on it. It was either to wet and slippery or frozen and icy. So when we've been going to the indoor arena once a week for practice he didn't want to lope.  I think that he thought there wasn't enough room.  Finally a couple of the girls started loping in a big circle and my horse just kept trotting almost as fast ast they were loping. After several times around I tapped once with my outside leg and he finally got it!! I've never trained a horse nor do I consider myself a trainer now but I am sooo excited to have the chance to bond with my horse as we work through the training together. I could feel that he was really trying his hardest to do what I was asking he just wasn't sure what that was.  It is such a wonderful feeling to connect with a horse like this. All horses I've rode previously were at least 10 or more years old. He is 5 and had very little training before I got him. At first it seems like he is nervous but he always wants to work for me. From the second I get the saddle on he is ready to walk and trot when I ask. And now we have accomplished the lope. I still have a lot of other work ahead so I'm sure I'll be asking for more help soon. Probably more on the bending exercises. Is there anyone who has a video. I've heard it explained but it is confusing to me in words.

Great job!!!!!!! While I am thinking about it I thought I would tell you how my then 10 year old first loped his gelding. (he shows halter)We always play a confidence building game of chase in the areana 100x200 where he gives a head start on foot and he has to beat me down to the other end. Needless to say the gelding caught on, as he is bred to be a cutting horse. As Ethan raced down after me he began to lope to Ethans surprise. When we got to the end he was almost in tears both scared and excited, but from that day foward he has been able to mearly ask and Sasha knows what he wants.Talk about a scared dad but man was I proud of him and every ride they both get better!!!
