Bandaging
U Rock 'n Ride has some great members - catch up on their updates.
Well I have spent the last 6 weeks bandaging my daughter's horse Felix. In all the mud that we have had he managed to do a pretty good number on his pastern. He cut it almost from fetlock to coronet and laid it open for about 1/4 of the total area of his pastern. Of course we did not see it until it had been done for a day and with all the mud my trailer was stuck.
Made the appointment with the vet for the next morning, set up being able to take him to my work and having a stable where I had a hope of keeping him clean and dry and then gave my husband the bad news. He helped by getting the trailer unstuck and then Felix and I were on our way.
The vet cleaned and bandaged it and there was not enough skin left to stitch so I didn't have to worry about that. She did give him a huge shot of penicillian and sent us on. She does a great job with my horses. Somehow Felix managed to give himself the best of a bad cut. There was no joint, ligament, or tendon damage. He will just have a scar.
Today I was able to put a smaller bandage on it. He has mostly filled in with new skin and we made it thru without having any proud flesh crop up.
I think that learning how to do proper bandaging was one of the best things I have ever done.
Now if he will just grow hair back over it.......
