What’s your typical day like?
Until recently I was working almost full time. When I came home I would do chores and, if I had energy, ride or work with Sora. Now I haven’t had any work for a month so I'll get more done with our fence and hopefully be able to get Sora more finished before it gets too cold to ride. Starting in September I'll have Grad school classes three days a week.
How did you first find horses … or did they find you?
I honestly don't remember a time when I didn't love them. I got my first pony when I was seven. Two years later (we didn't have the pony anymore) I took riding lessons for a few months and then didn't have lessons or a horse until I was twelve. That’s when I got MY first horse "Bucky". I would say that for all of that time I had to work hard to have horses in my life.
Favorite horse story?
This one has to do with my horse Bucky and me. I was fourteen and on a trail ride with a bunch of adult women. We had been out for a few hours on a huge trail system and we heard someone calling for help. We all ignored it since the person didn't sound desperate and we couldn't see anyone so we kept riding. After a few more minutes we came around a bend and saw a guy sitting on the ground holding a bow, it was hunting season, and calling for help. When we got closer we saw that he had a makeshift bandage around his leg and it was soaked with blood. He told us that he had tripped down a hill and gashed his leg on one of his arrows. We didn't have cell reception so we decided to carry him out since he was up for it. Bucky was the only horse in the group that had experience going double-back. He also had the interestingly appropriate habit of bucking so I offered with some trepidation to take the guy out on Bucky. The other women agreed that my horse was the best for the job. Bucky ended up being wonderful and we got the guy out to the park office so they could call for help. We got the horses back home and everything was fine until my mom saw the huge blood stain on the side of my horse!
If you could change one thing within the horse industry, what would that be?
Currently I would change many things about Arabian halter shows in general including the shanking. I feel like it gives a wonderful breed a bad name. Other than horses, what else do you enjoy doing for fun? I enjoy spending time outside hiking and spending time at the beach. I also love cooking food (and eating it!). I spend WAY too much time reading usually listening to music at the same time :~)
Is there a special significance to your avatar?
Oh yeah! That was the first ride on Sora that was captured on camera and I LOVE how relaxed and happy she looks in it.
Anything else we should know about you?
Well, along with riding horse I collect model horses and sculpt them. I have a bachelor’s degree in music performance and I play the cello. I have a blog and a website for my sculpting studio.

Working with horses is time intensive with much of the work being done without a lot of help. Check out Top Ten Timesavers in this month's Stable Management (the link will open in a new window)!
