Hair
Men: Keep it short, above the ear and collar. If your hair is any longer it looks messy. Period. No trend in fashion is going to change my mind on this one. Ladies – If your hair falls below the collar of your shirt, it needs to be in a bun – a fake one if necessary. Remember your mother's Aqua Net? It would hold hair three feet high? Find it or the equivalent and use it. Spray/slick your hair so it's nice and neat with no fly-aways. As an added bonus, if you use enough your hat is more likely to stay on in a windy show pen.

Spit & Polish
This is basic but often forgotten. Clean your tack. Clean your tack. Clean your tack. A very basic saddle can shine if it's clean and well oiled. If it has silver on it, make sure it's polished and buffed to a glowing shine. Whether you invested $50 or $5,000 in your saddle – take care of it and keep it clean. A judge will be more impressed by the exhibitor who took time to make a modest saddle shine than by the one who has expensive equipment but doesn't take care of it.

Back to Basics
It sounds so simple, but so many seem to forget that it's important to present a clean and groomed horse. It's all about a little elbow grease – not expensive grooming products. I don't care how great your outfit is – if there's a manure stain on your horses butt – that's what the judge will remember.
