Articles Bling in the Ring Bling in the Ring

We all know how much time we spend preparing our horse and ourselves for a big show; months and months. Isn't a little silly to spend all this time honing our skills and then not take the time to make sure you and your horse look the best you can when you enter the ring? We see this time and time again - nice horse, good rider, but neither horse nor rider looks as impressive as they could. Dirty spots on horse and clothing, messy hair - there's a reason people say first impressions count; because they do!

We're really excited about this part of U Rock 'n Ride. We're ready, willing and able to share, but also eager to hear your thoughts, questions, ideas and feedback about what you'd like to see in Bling in the Ring. Contact Us,  send pictures, and tell us your success stories and even the not so successful tales. We'd love to get to know you better and share what you know with our U Rock 'n Ride community.

My paint horse Frankie and i are into the Western Pleasure as well as halter and showmanship. I've found a nice matching Blazer and pants work well for the halter and showmanship side of things. I find it amazing that just because one person has a hobby horse outfit that the next person HAS to have one that has more bling or a brighter color. If you look clean, polished and proud of your animal it shows. If you are uncomfortable or it looks forced THE JUDGE WILL NOTICE. As far as the pleasure end, my mom makes my show clothes (so that i could buy a nice pair of custom chaps) and they look amazing. Fads or just that FADS...they last a week. Many people would rather say hey look i got a new show shirt that cost $500 than say hey look what i spent time training my horse to do. Its so frustrating for those of us who do well with limited resources when someone who cares more about the color of the ribbon wins.

I agree! You need to make sure that you are all put together, neat, clean and well groomed...and the same goes for your horse. I think the second most important thing after cleanliness is confidence and a smile.

I received Reserve Grand Champion in Showmanship this summer. The other exhibitors and horses had tremendous patterns. I was unsure of the end result after watching everyone else even though I had a great pattern. The one thing I had that no one else had was a SMILE and LOTS of confidence. Obviously the judge was impressed!

If you go out there acting as if the class is yours (along with some hard work outside of the show ring) it will set you apart from the rest. I've ring-mastered for plenty of judges and they all say that if someone looks like they are having a good time, they will remember that.

So go out in that ring...stand up tall, be snappy, and smile like there's no tomorrow!
